About caledonia, Michigan.

caledonia, Michigan

Caledonia is approximately 30 miles south of Grand Rapids in southeastern Kent County.  Since it is so close to Grand Rapids it is known as a commuter city.  It is also a great place to live, it is situated on beautiful Emmons Lake, which gives it a balance between country and city.

HISTORY

In 1838 the area was settled in by Asahel Kent who came from Ohio.  Many of the communities in western Michigan were named after cities in New York in order to attract people to move there.  The Grand River Valley Railroad helped with the growth along with a depot and post office, named Caledonia Station.  In 1884 the name Caledonia Station became just Caledonia and was incorporated into a village in 1888.

EDUCATION

The Caledonia community has eight public schools.  In 2004 the high school was built with an enrollment of 1,250 students.  An alternative school was built in 2006.  There are two middle schools and they are in competition with their sporting events.

POPULATION

There were 1,102 people and 430 households at the 2000 census.  The community is 97.91% white and then a mix of other ethnicities.  The median household income in the village was $50,724 and the median income for a family was $56,429.
