Zeeland has become a part of the west Michigan metropolitan area due to its proximity to Grand Rapids and Holland. It has retained much of its Dutch tradition and has a diversified business base. Zeeland was originally settled by Dutch colonists from Zeeland Province in the Netherlands. In 1847 Reverand James Vander Meulen, James Vander Luyster, Jan Steketes and Christian de Herder were considered the town fathers. During the lumber boom in the mid 1800’s Zeeland became a booming area. It was incorporated as a village in 1875 and later a city in 1907.
The population of Zeeland is 5,448 people. There has been a population growth of 5.63 percent since the 2000 census. The median age is 37.4 years and median household income is $46,948.
