History
Charles Mears in 1859 was a noted lumber baron to the area who platted the village along with Giles B. Slocum, he named the town Mears. It was renamed Whitehall in 1862. The town was strategically located for distributing lumber. It was incorporated as a village in 1867. It was later incorporated as a city in 1942.
Population
Whitehall has a population of 2,810 people and has had a growth of 1.91 percent since the 2000 census. The median age is 40.0 years and the median household income is $38,721. The racial makeup is 95.5% White, 2.1% Hispanic, 1.4% American Indian, 0.8% Black and 0.7% other race.
Education
Whitehall school district is comprised of the Shoreline Elementary School (PreK-2nd), Helen R. Ealy Elementary (3rd-5th), Whitehall Middle School (6th-8th) and the Whitehall High School (9th-12th). The public schools spend $5,825 per student and there are 18 students per teacher in Whitehall.
