Wayland, Michigan
Wayland was first settled in 1836 when Colonel Isaac Barnes built a sawmill there. His son George eventually became a state representative as well as the first postmaster in 1844. Wayland is named after a town in New York where many of Michigan’s settlers came from. It was incorporated as a village in 1858.
