Stanton, Michigan
Stanton is located in the heart of Montcalm County and is the county seat. Stanton has a strong school system and is less than five miles from Montcalm Community College. The picturesque downtown area has turn-of-the century buildings situated on a hill facing east. Stanton celebrates its Old Fashioned Days in August.
History
Stanton was organized in 1860, the county seat was moved here from Greenville. The County voted to move the county seat here from Greenville. Levi Camburn, the first settler, moved here in 1862. The city was renamed for the then Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton in 1863. It was was incorporated as a village in 1869 and later as a city in 1881.
Population
As of 2009 Stanton’s population is 1,487 people, it has had a growth of 1.20 percent since the 2000 census. The median age is 31.8 years and the median household income is $33,042. The racial makeup of the community is 93.2% White, 4.9% Hispanic, 2.1% two or more races, 1.1% other race and 1.1% American Indian.
Education
The school district serves approximately 2,100 students in three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school in addition there are many educational opportunities for adults in the community. The Stanton public schools spend $5,518 per student, there are about 19 students per teacher.
