History

Louis Lovell recorded an entry for land here in 1851 and John W. Winsor built the first small business, a sawmill.  Erastus P. Brown became the first postmaster on October 14, 1864.  Sheridan incorporated as a village in 1877 and was named for Union Civil War General Philip Sheridan.

The population of Sheridan is 695 people and it has increased its population growth by 0.85 percent since the 2000 census.  Sheridan is located in south-central Montcalm County, it is split in half by Evergreen and Sidney Townships.  The town has a beautiful lake, complete with a park and a beach.  The median age of the residents is 39.6 years and the median household income is $34,475.  The median home cost in Sheridan is $110,608.  Compared to the rest of the country, Sheridan’s cost of living is 23.31% Lower than the U.S. average.

 

EDUCATION Sheridan Elementary School is among the few schools in Michigan that has received the Great Schools Rating of 8 out of 10.  The public schools spend $5,452 per student.  There are about 18 students per teacher in Sheridan.
