HISTORY
Elisha Newman made the first land entry in the township of Portland in June of 1833. He did not become a settler until the spring of 1836. Portland was organized as a township in March of 1838 and they had a township meeting April 2, 1838 at the home of Joshua Boyer. No plats were recorded until 1846. POPULATION As of 2009 the population of Portland is 3,710 people which is a 0.13 percent increase since the 2000 census. The median age is 33.5 years of age and the median household income is $48,025. The racial makeup of the town is 96.9% White, 1.3% Hispanic, 1.1% two or more races, 0.8% American Indian, 0.5% Black. EDUCATION The schools in Portland are Oakwood Elementary School – Pre-2nd, Westwood Elementary, 3-5th grade, Portland middle school and Portland high school. Portland public schools spend $5,389 per student and there are 18 students per teacher.
