HISTORY Newaygo is named after Chief Naw-wa-goo, a signatory of the Treaty of Saginaw in 1812. In 1836 John Brooks came to Newaygo to harvest lumber and he was then the town’s first postmaster in 1847. Since the town is so close to the Muskegon river it is easy to send logs down the river during the lumber boom. POPULATION Newaygo’s population is 1,639 people. The median age is 30 years and the median household income is $34,826. The racial makeup is 95.87% white, 0.24% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 2.34% from other races and 1.20% from Hispanic or Latino. The median home price is $149,900. EDUCATION Newaygo has the Vera Wilsie Elementary School which is K-2nd grade with approximately 400 students, the Newaygo Upper Elementary School houses grades 3-5. The schools offer a well-rounded educational program. There is music, physical education art and computer technology.
