History
This community was developed during the lumber days and when a railroad came through. In order to attract people from the city the original name was Montrose Station which was the same name in New York. In 1857 H.K. Muir influenced the Detroit, Muskegon & Western RR (later the Grand Trunk) to build a line to the town. The village was incorporated in 1871. Muir is in Ionia County on the Maple River, it’s just a couple of miles from the mouth of the Grand River.
Population
As of 2009, Muir's population is 628 people. Since 2000, it has had a population growth of 1.26 percent.
The racial makeup of the village was 96.06% White, 0.32% Native American, 0.95% from other races and 2.68% from two or more races, 2.37% Hispanic or Latino. The median age is 33 years and the median income for a household in the village is $33,956.
