History
In 1855 the area was settled by Nat Sargent when he built his first house there. The town was named after William Montague Ferry, his son Noah Ferry named the city in honor of his father. He was one of the town fathers. William Ferry also founded the cities of Grand Haven and Ferrysburg. Ferry Street was the main street through town. It was officially incorporated into a village in 1883. In 1935 it was incorporated into a city. Montague’s economy is supported by a combination of factors, including tourism, some local manufacturing and its location as a commuter city to Muskegon.
Montague has the “World’s Largest Working Weathervane”. The city has a succssful football team, The Wildcats, they have won district 5 years in a row. The city is at the southern end of the Hart-Montague Trail, which attracts visitors for cycling and other things.

Montague’s population as of 2009 is 2,299 people. The growth since 2000 is 3.74 percent. The racial makeup is 97.17% White, 0.37% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.58% other races and 1.16% from two or more races, 2.33% Hispanic or Latino. The median age is 37 years. The median income is $40,677.
