Holland, Michigan
Holland is a beautiful community that is full of charm and excitement. It has its roots in Dutch culture with Dutch architecture and ambiance. The area is full of Dutch attractions, great beaches and an award-winning downtown area with lots of shops and galleries.
HISTORY
In 1847 Dr. Albertus Van Raalte lead a group of Dutch Calvinsits who were escaping persecution in The Netherlands they went on a 47 day trip from Rotterdam to New York. Due to inclement weather the group had to stay in Detroit. Van Raalte heard about land that was available in West Michigan so he decided to take a look. He reached his destination on January 1, 1847 which was Black Lake, today better known as Lake Macatawa. They settled in the territory February 9, 1847.
Holland is famous for its Tulip Time festival. In the 1920’s Lida Rogers, a biology teacher at Holland High School decided the town needed something and she suggested planting flowers. Nelis Tulip Farm imported tulip bulbs from the Netherlands and they planted them all around the town. There were 250,000 tulips planted for the event in the 1920’s, today there are nearly six million tulips used throughout the city.
POPULATION
The estimated population of this area as of 2008 was 34,076. The city is the largest municipality of the Holland-Grand Haven area. The median age of residents there is 29.2 Holland is made of several races 70% White, 22.2% Hispanic, 12.4% other, 2.5% African American, 1.7% Asian, 1.1% American Indian, and 0.6% Vietnamese.
EDUCATION
Holland Public Schools were founded in 1848 and hve earned state and national recognition for being an excellent school system. There are twelve schools, four townships and one district. The district has approximately 330 teachers who offer a diverse curriculum which includes art, music, theater, special education, English as a Second Language and other extra-curricular activities.
