HISTORY
Hesperia is located on the White River, the river flows on the north end, complete with a dam, swimming area and mill pond. Hisperia is located on the Newaygo/Oceana border. Booth Perry was the first settler to the area in 1856. In 1866 Hesperia was platted and a sawmill and a general store were built. The post office came in 1867 and the town was incorporated as a village in 1883. The town was named by Mary Cook because it resembled a garden. It is said that ‘Hesperia’ means “western land” which certainly fits the definition.
POPULATION
The population as of July 2008 is 949. The community is made up of 94.44% white, 0.42% African American, 1.47% Native American, 1.05% Asian, 0.63% from other races and 1.99% from two or more races, 0.94% Hispanic or Latino. The median income for a household in the village was $27,460. The median age is 35.5 years old.
