Grand Haven is an awesome place with its amazing beaches, recognized as one of the top five beaches in the United States by Good Morning America-Travel Morn.  There is a trolley in the historic downtown shopping district.  There are art galleries, charter fishing, the world’s largest musical fountain and a 2.5 mile boardwalk that takes you from downtown to Lake Michigan and the sandy beach.  There is a wide variety of lodging options hotels, motels, bed & breakfasts, fantastic vacation homes and rustic cabins.  The city has over 100 miles of bike trails, a state beach, a boardwalk, 2 lighthouses, a pier,  and a Great Lakes port

 

HISTORY

The area was inhabited by The Pottawattamie and Ottawa Indians due to the fact that it was a major trade route along the interior of Michigan. The impact of the Ottawa tribe on the area continues to be seen with the discovery of new artifacts.  In the mid to late 1800’s Grand Haven developed into a logging, lumber mill and shipping area, as well as a shipbuilding center.  During the early 1900’s Grand Haven was seen as a manufacturing area for the building of everything from automobiles to car parts to furniture to lighting and pianos.

As of July 2008 the population of Grand Haven was 10,608.  The median age is 35.5 years of age.  The estimated median household income is $41,504.  The races in Grand Haven are comprised of White 95.4%, Hispanic 1.6% and two or more races 1.4%.

The Grand Haven School District is located in Grand Haven, MI and includes 11 schools that have 6,034 students in grades PK through 12.  The district spends $8,354 per pupil in current expenditures.  The district spends 60% on instruction, 36% on support services and 3% on other elementary and secondary expenditures.
