HISTORY
Freemont’s first settler was Daniel R. Joslin, he built a cabin in 1854 and called it “Elm Corners”. In 1855 Daniel Weaver and his family settled and their home served as the first post office and first public school. He originally named the town Weaversville. During 1862 during the escalation of the Civil War it was renamed “Fremont Center” after the Union General: John Charles Fremont. It was incorporated as a village in 1875 and later as a city as “Fremont” in 1911. In the mid 1870’s the Gerber Family had moved to Fremont and established a tannery, this became a major industry. In 1928 the Fremont Canning Company became Gerber Baby Foods and Fremont became known as the home of the world’s best known baby.

The population of Fremont is 4,613 people, the median age of the residents is 37.4 years old. The median household income in 2007 was $33,911. The races in Fremont are made up of 95.3% white, 2.0 Hispanic, 1.0% two or more races, 0.8% American Indian.
