HISTORY
The northern border of Barry County is where Freeport is located and is situated on the picturesque Coldwater River. The town contains a main street which is a couple of blocks long and consists of several small stores and businesses. Freeport is known for its large lumber mill which is just to the north on the Coldwater. Freeport is a great place to go for a scenic drive with its winding roads, hills and farmland.
Founded in the mid-1800’s by Michael and Samuel Rousch who moved from Freeport, Ohio. They decided to name the town after their home town. In 1874 a train station and post office were built which gave it access to the rest of the world. It was incorporated into a village in 1907.
POPULATION
The population in July 2009 was 439. The median resident age is 34.1 years of age. The median household income in 2007 was $48,186. The white population is 92.6%, African American 2.0% and a variety of races make-up the rest. The median income for a household in the village was $42,708 and the median income for a family was $46.667.
