Clarksville is a quaint little farming community that has survived the different economic struggles due to its location which is adjacent to hard-working small farms and its easy access to larger urban area.  The town has a block-long main street section with several stores, churches, a bank and a local fire hall.  Clarksville is located in southwestern Ionia County.  Ionia County is located in the central region of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula.  The Ionia County Free Fair is considered one of the largest in the mid-western United States.  The county features are it’s slow-moving rives, including the Grand.   

 

HISTORY 

Clarksville was originally called Skipperville, in 1840 Joseph and Martin Campbell were the first settlers.  They started a cheese factory and the town was organized under the Campbell name.  In 1875, a post office was opened by Clark Howard who re-named the place Clarksville and became the first postmaster.  Around this time the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad made its way through and put the town on the map.  In 1925 it was organized as a village. 
 

POPULATION 

The town has 317 people as of the 2000 census.  The racial make-up was 96.53% white and the rest a diverse group of ethnicity.  At the time of the census the number of men in Clarksville was 157 which represents 49.5 percent of the total community.  The female population was 160 which is 50.5 of the total population.  The median age of people living in Clarksville, MI was 39.3 at the time of the last full census. 

The median income for a household in the village is $35,313 and the median income for a family is $53,750.  The median family income was $53,750.

 

 

EDUCATION

The last survey to determine who graduated from high school had 174 people had a high school degree, or 88.8% of the population.
