Casnovia is located in the extreme eastern portion of Muskegon County.  The town is divided in half with some of it in the eastern Kent County and the other half in Tyrone Township.  Situated on top of a hill the town overlooks mid-west Michigan’s beautiful orchard county.  Muskegon County is a major metropolitan center, it is also a major producer of agricultural items such as wheat, corn, dairy and livestock.  It is a popular spot for tourists with its sandy beaches, fishing and water sport activities.  It boasts many festivals including the July Air Show which is one of the best in the nation. 

 

 

HISTORY

The town was founded in 1850 by a tavern keeper Lot Fulkerson.  Having been organized as a village in 1875.  The name means “new home”, from the latin root words, casa (home) and nova.  The town was first discovered by French fur trappers in the 1600’s.  White Pine is so abundant that the town was developed during the turn-of-the century lumber boom.  At one point there were over 47 sawmills on Muskegon Lake.  Following the lumber era, the county continued diverse economic growth including paper and cement manufacturing, production of chemicals, engines, motors and even bowling equipment.

 

 

POPULATION

The population in July 2008 was 311.  The median resident age is 34.9 years.  The estimated median household income in 2007 was $43,225.
