  Bowne Township is a civil township located in Kent County of the state of Michigan. It had a population of 2,743 as indicated in the 2000 census. The township has a total area of 36 square miles with 35.8 of this area being terrain and 0.2 square miles being water.
 
 The township has a community known as the Alto, which is an unincorporated village located primarily in the county. Alto, which means high, was given to the village because it is situated at the highest point along the railway line on which it lies.
 
 According to the 2000 census, out of the 2,743 people, there were 880 households and 756 families. The township’s population density was 29.5/km2 and an average density of 9.8 km2 where there were 906 housing units. The median income for a household and a family was $60,909 and $61,544 respectively. The township has two recreational parks, Coldwater Park and Colby Park, a Kent District Library, and a Bowne Historical Museum. The township also has the Bowne Center School that has a collection of information about the eight one-room schoolhouses that have their origins in the township. The collection includes old fashioned desks, school books, and school items. The museum and the center school are headed by the Bowne Township Historical Commission that aims to preserve the entire history of the community and pass it on to the next generation.
